The Inner Voice You’ve Been Taught to Ignore
It’s still there. It always has been.
Have you ever had a quiet knowing… but talked yourself out of it?
Maybe it was the whisper that said:
“This relationship doesn’t feel right.”
“Say no to that invitation.”
“Rest today.”
“This version of your life doesn’t feel like you.”
But instead of following it, you pushed past it. Because that’s what we were taught to do. Many of us grew up in environments where we learned to value other people’s opinions more than our own instincts.
We were praised for being easygoing, agreeable, adaptable.
We learned to:
Gain consensus before checking in with our inner voice
Say yes even when we desperately wanted to say no
Keep performing and producing, even when we are soul-tired
And over time, we stopped trusting our inner voice to tell us the truth.
We learned to trust outside sources more than our own inner wisdom.
Not because we couldn’t hear it—but because we were taught to ignore it.
The Soul’s Voice Is Subtle—But Wise
Your soul moves in whispers, sensations, full-body knowing, quiet clarity.
It lives in the tightness in your chest when you agree to something you don’t want to do.
It shows up in the peace you feel when you give yourself permission to rest.
It’s the way your body softens when you stop forcing what’s not working—and start following what feels true.
And when you ignore it long enough, you feel it in the form of:
Burnout
Numbness
Anxiety
A quiet ache that says, “This can’t be all there is.”
What Happens When You Listen
There have been a few life-defining moments where I clearly remember my inner voice speaking to me:
When I met my husband, I had a deep-seated feeling that I’d marry him… and I did.
When I was in labor with my daughter, I knew something wasn’t right… and it wasn’t (she was stillborn).
When I booked a solo trip to Bali after failed fertility treatments… and left two weeks later.
Your soul knows what you need—so much better than anyone else ever could.
The world will offer suggestions, opinions, and advice, but no one on the outside will ever know what’s best for you better than the voice within.
How to Start Listening Again
Reconnecting with your inner voice doesn’t require a major life change or perfect ritual. It begins with noticing, honoring and making space.
Here are a few gentle ways to begin:
Pause when something feels off. Don’t rush past it. Ask: What’s trying to be heard?
Journal without a plan. Let your thoughts spill out—unedited, unfiltered.
Pay attention to your body. Where do you feel constriction? Where do you feel ease?
Be curious instead of critical. You’re not doing it wrong. You’re relearning trust.
And here’s the most important part:
You don’t have to act on every whisper.
You just have to start listening.
Because listening builds trust. And trust is how you come home to yourself.
